Dream To Succeed Foundation professionally adopted Melkin Merchán, an extraordinary young with talent for painting. He was born in Aracataca and the Foundation currently supports academic tuition, housing and transportation in the Escuela de Bellas Artes at Universidad del Atlántico, Barranquilla Colombia.
When I was nine years old, I was intrigued by an American man wig blue eyes in a super market back in Colombia. I ran and approached him to ask him for a word in English and he said, “Beautiful.” Then, he said that if I remembered that word, Santa Claus would come to my house. Knowing that Santa never came before, I told him that I didn’t think he would, then he gave me a second word to remember, “Believe.” I learned the biggest lesson of my life at that moment- “love and believe in myself and dream to get anything in the world”, I also think that my path in life changed in that moment. He became my professional father and I worked for his organization for many years in exchange of an educational sponsorship because my mom would not accept anything for free. Santa Claus didn’t come, but he did!
My story started that day and continues to be beautiful, full of hope and determination to succeed. That dream also includes my children, family and friends. Today, it is time to pay it forward. The foundation, Dream to Succeed, has professionally adopted Melkin Merchan born in Aracataca, Colombia, the same town where Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nobel Prize winner was born. That town has a lot of talented and happy people. I met Melkin back in November with a very sad expression in his face and pictures of his paintings. I was amazed by them and trying to motivate him and change his sad expression, I asked him about his dreams and goals, and the only thing he wanted was to have the opportunity to go to an art school. I wondered what else he can learn after seeing his work. But, he told me that he wanted to learn to paint with the right brushes and instruments.
He truly has a lot of knowledge and techniques to share with others. Do you like his art? Aren’t they amazing? Melkin is a natural talented artist. Yesterday, March 1st, he started his semester in the Universidad del Atlantico, Bellas Artes in Colombia sponsored by Dream to Succeed and he is committed to paint 10 pieces of art to raise funds for himself and other dreamers. Melkin is now under my wings just as my professional father encouraged me to do with others exactly what he did for me. Let’s encourage Melkin and send him a motivational note to get his dream come true! Thank YOU.
Special thanks to Keith MacPherson, Ivonne Molinares, Ligia Matera, Salvador Pabonee and the whole team at Soñar es Crecer in Colombia. Together, we are making a difference! Join us by taking others under your wings and motivate them to succeed. The impact multiplies!
